Ok, I admit it. I obsess about the weather. Precipitation and temperature have such an impact on the well being of the pasture and animals. I daily remind myself to not worry about what I can not control (like the weather), but that is a tough task. I try to focus on what I can control like using rotational grazing to make the pastures as thick, diverse and resilient as possible. That way when the droughty weather comes, we have a stock pile of forage. We also keep planting trees (see photo farther below) to provide more natural shade for the animals. Even though as a puny human, I try to do what I can to mitigate the weather, an assist from Mother Nature is oh so appreciated. After a June with less than .5 inches of rain, we got over ten times that amount in July! Since we did not allow the animals to overgraze the pastures during the dry spell, the forages responded with a lot of compensatory growth in July. That is why you can barely see the cattle in the video below. I like this video not only because of the content cattle and green grass but also because if you listen you can hear so many other creatures like birds and bugs out in the pasture. |
